Housework and cooking
Nice! You’ve found yourself a place. We’ve got a couple of tips about what you need to know when living in a room. Let’s start with practical matters. It might not be the most fun part, but it is important. Namely: housework. Because now you’re living on your own, this is also part of what you need to do. So we’ve listed the most important things you need to do.
- Vacuuming
- Grocery shopping
- Tidying your room
- Cleaning
- Taking out rubbish
These are the key elements that need to be done every week. As a little tip for you: Make a weekly checklist. That way you won’t forget anything and you’ll keep your room nice. And ticking off tasks is always a nice feeling, isn’t it? Another thing that needs to be done every day around the house is cooking. Maybe you already did it when you lived at home or maybe it’s completely new to you, but there’s no getting away from it. A good tip: prep in advance. Cook larger portions, freeze the food and then eat it later in the week. This means you don’t have to cook every day or throw your leftovers away.
Study spot
In addition to housework, you’ll be busy studying, of course. This means having a good study spot in your room is a must. Invest in a good office chair because, like it or not: You’ll be spending a lot of time sitting here studying. If you get the feeling you should be studying somewhere else, then you’ll be alright with us. After all, Nijmegen and Arnhem both have plenty of places where you can study for your next exams. For example, you can go to the Rozet Library in Arnhem or the University Library in Nijmegen.
Budgeting tips
Moving into a room can be expensive. We’ve listed the best budgeting tips to help you.
- Save! This sounds pretty obvious, but it is a good tip. There are always unexpected costs when you live in a room, like if something breaks down. If you save, you’ll have a buffer to fix these issues quickly.
- Check if you’re entitled to rent allowance. This can make a massive difference to your monthly rental costs.
- Keep track of how much you spend on daily expenses like groceries. This means you can clearly see how much you’ve got left over, what you can save or what you can do fun things with.
The most important thing: Enjoy student life
And now for the best part of moving into a room: enjoying student life! Arnhem and Nijmegen happen to be great cities for that. Both are bursting with nice pubs and clubs where you can have fun. Studying is a time in your life like no other, so our final tip: enjoy!
