Information for international students at Radboud University

SSH& is a housing association in Nijmegen and Arnhem. We are a non-profit organisation and we rent out rooms and residences to international degree-seeking students. We mostly rent out unfurnished rooms trough a lottery system, with indefinite rental agreements. This means that you can live with us for your whole study period.

Am I eligible as an international student?

You are eligible for our housing when you are a international degree-seeking student and if you follow a full-time study in Arnhem or Nijmegen. You can register with us between the age of 16 and 30.

First year international Master’s students

First year international Master’s students, who do not live in the Netherlands yet, can register with SSH& and apply for rooms, but can also apply for a temporary, furnished room trough Radboud University

Not eligible for lottery

International exchange students cannot register with SSH&, but can apply for housing assistance through Radboud University.

How do I apply for SSH& rooms?

  • If you are eligible for SSH& housing you can create your free profile on our website. Once you have a completed profile, you can start your search!
  • Every Wednesday at noon, vacant rooms and residences are published on our listings page.
  • You can apply until the following Wednesday. You can respond to one ad per week.
  • On a few complexes we give (travel time) priority to students that have to travel for more than two hours, from their home address to Nijmegen.
  • The following Wednesdays at 11 a.m. the published rooms are allocated based on a draw. The draw is done through a system that chooses at random.
  • Rooms listed are unfurnished and rented indefinitely (unless the ad explicitly states that it concerns a furnished or temporary room). So, if you have acquired a room via the lottery, it is yours as long as you are studying at Radboud University.
  • In order to accept a room offer, we ask for your official Radboud proof of study. You cannot rent a room without this document. Therefore, make sure you apply for a study programme at Radboud University before the application deadline.

More tips on finding a room

Our listings page is not your only option when looking for a room in Nijmegen. Besides the rooms published on our website, we also own student houses where our tenants have the right to nominate a new tenant themselves (vote-in right). These rooms are not listed on our website, but our tenants usually advertise vacant rooms in Facebook groups (try: 'kamer gezocht Nijmegen').

And besides SSH&, there are other real estate companies in Nijmegen or private landlords renting out rooms to students. Common website to find housing for students are:

What kind of accommodation we offer

Our ads show what type of room you will be renting, what the start date of the lease is, and what you pay per month. But also, what facilities there are and how many flatmates you share this with. As explained, most rooms are unfurnished and the lease period is usually indefinite. This means that you can rent the room as long as you are still a student. However, on occasion we advertise a furnished room, for a fixed period. If this is the case, we mention this explicitly in the ad.

Where your search begins
When you have just registered with us, you can only apply for rooms with shared facilities, or the smaller studios. The larger flats with private facilities are available exclusively to SSH& tenants. This means that you can respond to these once you live with us and are ready for a next step. Not sure which rooms you can and cannot respond to? No worries: in the advertisement it is stated whether the unit is available for tenants only or if all students can respond.
